Join the 𝐋𝐨𝐮𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐎𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚 for 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐡'𝐬 𝐒𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐲 𝐍𝐨. 𝟓, an evening that brings together music by Silvestre Revueltas, Sergei Prokofiev, and Dmitri Shostakovich.
The program opens with 𝐒𝐢𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐮𝐞𝐥𝐭𝐚𝐬'𝐬 𝐒𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝑹𝒆𝒅𝒆𝒔. Written for the 1936 Mexican film 𝑹𝒆𝒅𝒆𝒔, the music reflects Revueltas's interest in the sounds and rhythms of everyday life. Pulsing rhythms and shifting orchestral textures give the work a strong sense of movement and place.
Next, violinist 𝐀𝐮𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐎𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧 joins the orchestra for 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐢 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐤𝐨𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐯'𝐬 𝐕𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐨 𝐍𝐨. 𝟐 . The concerto moves freely between lyrical melodies and energetic passages, giving the soloist plenty of room to shape the music. Written in 1935, it reflects Prokofiev's distinctive approach to rhythm, melody, and orchestral color.
The evening concludes with 𝐃𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐫𝐢 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐡'𝐬 𝐒𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐲 𝐍𝐨. 𝟓, conducted by 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐨𝐬 𝐌𝐢𝐠𝐮𝐞𝐥 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐨 in his return to the LPO podium. Composed in 1937, the symphony moves through moments of tension, reflection, and force. Its final movement brings the work to a powerful conclusion and has made the symphony one of Shostakovich's most widely performed works.
𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐮𝐞𝐥𝐭𝐚𝐬, 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐤𝐨𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐯, and 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐡 each approached the orchestra in very different ways. Their music shares a fascination with rhythm, contrast, and dramatic expression. Experience these three works with the LPO on October 22, 2026, at the Orpheum Theater.

𝐒𝐢𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐮𝐞𝐥𝐭𝐚𝐬 (1899–1940) was a major figure in Mexican music during the first half of the 20th century. He drew inspiration from Mexican folk traditions, popular music, and the sounds of daily life. Rather than simply quoting folk melodies, he often translated the energy of street music, dances, popular songs, and regional rhythms into his own musical language.
𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐢 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐤𝐨𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐯 (1891–1953) was one of the leading composers of 20th-century Russian music. His work is known for its rhythmic energy, melodic invention, and distinctive harmonic language.
𝐃𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐫𝐢 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐡 (1906–1975) was one of the most important composers of the Soviet era. His music often explores contrasts between public and private expression, humor and seriousness, and restraint and intensity.
