Preclinical OSCE Teaching Session 6: Ophthalmoscopy and the Eye

This teaching session by Code Blue OSCE Crew, offers an in-person opportunity for medical students and professionals to enhance their clinical OSCE skills, with specialized focus on ophthalmoscopy and the eye Running every other week via teams, each session includes an hour of student-led (doctor backed) teaching alongside an hour of practice in breakout rooms. Endorsed by Geeky Medics, this peer-led initiative encourages all students in their clinical years to join in and gain valuable hands-on experience.

Learning Objectives for this week:

• CCA-focused reiteration of normal eye and optic tract anatomy in relation to function and mechanism for vision.
• Use of an ophthalmoscope, including device settings and preparation, to inspect the fundus and recognise normal retinal structures.
• Measurement of visual acuity for distance vision using a Snellen Chart; near point; and assessment of visual fields.
• Explain the refractive corrections for distance vision, as well as the detection and correction of astigmatism.
• Testing colour vision and interpretation of results.
• Explain the effects of phenylephrine, pilocarpine and tropicamide on the autonomic nervous system
• Demonstrate an increased understanding of the autonomic nervous system and its neurotransmitters
• Identify neurotransmitter receptors: classes and sites of drug action within the eye
