The Juilliard Pre-College Symphony presents a vibrant orchestral program of works that evoke the many meanings of home: its landscape, musical traditions, mythic stories, and even a people’s struggle to find its place within it. Under the baton of Adam Glaser, young musicians ages 8 to 18 perform Holst’s rhapsody on idyllic English countryside, Kodály’s homage to traveling musicians in his boyhood Hungarian home, and Smetana’s dramatic symphonic poem inspired by the hero of the mythic Bohemian Maiden’s War. To close, Glaser leads William Grant Still’s groundbreaking “Afro-American Symphony,” which blends blues with classical forms in an expression of dignity and belonging.
