Ukrainian conductor Oksana Lyniv leads a program that conjures hope, fear, and triumphant perseverance. The program pairs Joan Tower’s For the Uncommon Woman, dedicated to conductor JoAnn Falletta and a nod to Copland’s most well-known title, with a different Copland piece, his 1942 Lincoln Portrait, featuring narration by Juilliard Drama’s Daniel Saunders. Liszt’s Totentanz builds on the Gregorian Dies Irae or “Day of Wrath,” sweeping through the solo pianist and orchestra into a churning and chilling danse macabre.
Reflections of Hope, by Ukrainian composer Eduard Resatsch, was conceived as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Resatsch channels feelings of isolation and shared experience through solo performers and spoken word into optimistic light. Respighi’s tone poem Pines of Rome, the symphonic showcase, moves from lyric to melancholy before culminating with ecstatic brass fanfare.
