Deer Park Prairie may be only 51 acres, but its impact reaches thousands of acres beyond its boundaries. This remarkable remnant of coastal tallgrass prairie provides a living example of the many benefits healthy prairies provide—from supporting extraordinary plant, pollinator, bird, and wildlife diversity to building healthy soils, storing carbon, and moving water through the landscape. Perhaps most importantly, Deer Park Prairie serves as a “Mother Prairie,” providing native seed and plant material that has helped restore and increase biodiversity on prairies throughout the Houston and Gulf Coast region. Join Colin for a closer look at what makes Deer Park Prairie so special, what this small patch of remnant prairie can teach us about the value of grasslands, and how each of us can become part of the community working to protect them.
About the Speaker
Colin O’Neal is the Development Director for the Native Prairies Association of Texas and a longtime Houston-area conservation volunteer. Growing up in the Texas Hill Country gave him an early appreciation for wild places and the importance of protecting them as our communities grow. A former science teacher and educator, he first got his hands dirty in prairie restoration at Armand Bayou Nature Center and continues to volunteer there, as well as with Galveston Bay Foundation and the Exploration Green Conservancy. Colin holds an MS in Neuroscience and Education from Columbia University and is a Certified Interpretive Guide Trainer through the National Association for Interpretation. He now brings his background in science, education, and community-building to growing the community of people working to protect Texas prairies—among the most imperiled ecosystems in North America.
