PRACTISING: A WEEK IN JANUARY 2027

A week-long Contact Improvisation & Compositional immersion with [ two for now ], Emily Bowman and Joey Lehrer.
Often a workshop can be appealing to get things, learn new skills, absorb new info. What if those possibilities can exist alongside simply being in practice - a curious embodied state to notice our attending?
This workshop aims to explore practising: what it is to have a practice, to be in practice, and to return to something over time? We are interested in exposing some of the how of practising: how are we attending, what are we noticing, and how might we bring questions into the dance without needing to answer them? How might we hold our intentions lightly enough to remain curious about what else could emerge? Can we balance the accumulation of more material with simply being in practice?
The practice of this workshop remains deeply embedded in Contact Improvisation (CI) - drawing on more than a decade of Emily & Joey’s collaborative CI research. We will move through three overlapping ‘modes’ of our practice: contact, composition and performance. Contact offers a space for sensing and attending to weight, touch and the materiality of the contact body. Composition asks how dancing takes shape in real time, and how we notice and make decisions beyond listening to the point of contact. Performance brings another kind of heightened awareness to the practice through watching, being watched, and noticing what changes when we share our practising with others.
Finally, this workshop is infused with an approach we call irreverent intentions: a commitment to detail alongside a willingness to disrupt it. For us, this proposition helps keep the dancing serious without becoming too precious. Intentionality brings the rigour, the precision, the loyalty to the moment. Irreverence brings the openness, the weird and giving less f**ks.
As always, reflecting through writing, watching and discussion will be a significant aspect of our shared experience.
