Possessed by Paul James is the sound of one man doing the work of a full band, banjo strapped high, foot pounding a stomp box, fiddle screaming somewhere between a holler and a hymn. Behind the name is Konrad Wert, a Texas-based songwriter who spent his youth in a small Mennonite community and has spent his adulthood as a special education teacher, a father, and a relentless one-man touring act who somehow makes time for all three.
His catalog, including There Will Be Nights When I'm Lonely, which climbed the Billboard Bluegrass charts, and the more recent Fighting For Our Own Survival, moves through the same restless territory his live shows do: front-porch folk one minute, blues-soaked stomp the next, punk-rock urgency the minute after that. It's a sound built less on genre than on instinct, shaped by pacifist roots and a life spent working full days in the classroom before driving through the night to the next stage.
There's nothing polished about it, and that's the point. Possessed by Paul James plays like a man who has nothing left to prove and everything left to say, songs that are rough around the edges but sincere all the way through, carrying the weight of two decades on the road and in the classroom alike.
Whether you've followed him since his early revival-tour days or you're catching him for the first time, this is a show that hits harder live than any record can capture.
