About this Event
Explore your identity, build creative skills, and share your story your way, at this small group workshop.
International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) on 3 December, is a United Nations day that promotes awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability. More than 5.5 million people in Australia, or 1 in 5, live with disability. Their stories and contributions are too often missing from public conversations.
This free one-day workshop is for people with disability, including non-visible disabilities and mental health conditions.
What you'll gain from the workshop:
Spend a day in a supportive space with other people with disability, learning practical photography and storytelling skills. You’ll work with a photographer to shape a portrait, and write a story, that show you as you want to be seen.
If you choose to share them, your photos and story can help challenge stereotypes and myths about disability. No photography experience is needed.
The workshop includes:
- Guided photography activities to explore your identity, strengths and experiences
- Simple photography techniques anyone can use
- Supportive peer discussions about the assumptions and stereotypes you've come across
- Writing a short caption or quote
- Making an audio recording of your story
- A portrait session with a professional photographer
- A light catered lunch
You’re in control and you decide what's shared. With your consent, your portrait and images, caption and audio recording have the opportunity to feature in City of Sydney communications and a digital exhibition for IDPwD. This could include large format outdoor digital screens in our local area, social media and the City of Sydney website.
After the workshop, we'll show you exactly how your image and story would be used. You'll give final consent before anything is published.
Registrations are essential as places are limited. Priority will be given to people who live, work or study in the City of Sydney local area. Support workers are welcome.
An experienced facilitator from Folkal leads the workshop. Folkal helps people share their stories through photography and storytelling.
