In the face of an ongoing genocide of the people of Palestine by the colonial and apartheid state of Israel, Palestinian poets have continued to turn to one of their most beloved art forms as a powerful act of cultural resistance and storytelling. As the Zionist occupation continues to target, suppress, and silence Palestinian voices, poetry remains a vital means of preserving memory, reclaiming their own narratives and celebrating a culture that continues to endure. How can we in Taiwan help amplify and uplift Palestinian voices and stories? In what unique ways can poetry help represent Palestinian struggles? In this two-part event, participants will have a chance to learn about some poetry by or pertaining to Palestine and its people, write their own poems as they relate to Palestine, and perform them in front of a (loving!) audience. The first session will explore how Palestinians have used poetry as a tool of resistance. Together, we will read and discuss Palestinian poems, before moving into a generative writing session where participants will start crafting poems of their own. The second session will be focused on performance, where participants can choose to read their own poem or existing poems on Palestine.
Joining both sessions is not required; however, please note that priority to read at the second session will be given to those who also join the first session. Please also note there will be a poetry critique workshop held by Taipei Poetry Collective on Wednesday evening, October 21st, where participants will have a chance to share their drafts with other poets before the performance event. Details will be shared at the first session and posted on the @taipeipoetrycollective Instagram page.
Co-hosted by Taipei Poetry Collective and Amnesty International Taiwan English Speaking Group.
