The holidays are approaching, which means many of us will soon be spending quality time with the people who made us who we are, the people who know exactly how to push our buttons, and the people we love dearly despite having very complicated feelings about all of the above. So we’re going to write poetry about it.Join us at Bluestocking on October 24 at 2pm for an afternoon with Michigan poet Marissa LaPorte, author of Dead Grandmas Are Universal, her poetry collection exploring family, memory, grief, relationships, identity, and all the complicated emotional territory that comes with being a person who has other people in their life.
We’ll start with a beginner-friendly poetry workshop focused on writing about family. We’ll use a few simple prompts to explore family memories, relationships, identity, and the assorted joys, wounds, absurdities, and emotional baggage that tend to come with the people who share, or once shared, our lives. Following the workshop, we'll enjoy a short reading from Marissa, including a few selections from the collection and a conversation about the themes and inspiration behind her work. Then there will be time to meet Marissa, talk poetry, and get your copy of Dead Grandmas Are Universal signed. You do not need to consider yourself a poet. You do not need to have taken a creative writing class. You do not have to share anything you write. This is a low-pressure space to put some complicated feelings on paper, with optional sharing for those who want it. And, as we head toward the annual holiday season of forced togetherness, perhaps develop a healthier outlet than silently screaming into the mashed potatoes.
