Join us for our next discussion of the Poetic Eddas. This session we'll discuss "Baldr's Dreams" and "The List of Rig".We are past the the "heroic" or "historic" poems of the Eddas and now onto two poems that deal directly with the roles of the gods.
What thoughts do these poems inspire? Are the symbols and events still meaningful? What questions do they raise for you?
What did you learn about Norse culture? Do you disagree with any commentary?
The Poetic Eddas are the oral literature of Iceland and Norway, written down around 1200 by Snorri. The Eddas are a primary source for today's Norse pagan beliefs (aka, Asatru). The poems are a great tragic literature tradition, with vivid descriptions of the emotional states of the protagonists, Gods and heroes alike. The impact of these sagas on world culture is wide-ranging, inspiring works by Richard Wagner and J.R.R. Tolkien.
You may use any translation you like. There are a few available online. Comparing translations has been quite informative as we interpret and analyze the poems.
