About this Event
Join accomplished pattern designer, author, educator, and Center for Pattern Design founder Sandra Ericson for an expansive look at one of textiles’ most enduring and transformative techniques. Drawing on more than three decades of teaching fashion design, patternmaking, draping, and textiles, as well as years of presenting pleating lectures and workshops throughout the United States, Ericson brings both deep historical knowledge and practical experience to the subject.
The program will trace the origins and evolution of pleating, from the dramatic neck ruffs worn in European courts and the elaborate forms of Victorian fashion to interpretations found in textile traditions around the world. Through historical tools and equipment, global examples, and the visionary work of influential designers and artists, Ericson will reveal how a simple fold can transform cloth into structure, volume, movement, and expression.
Participants will also learn approachable methods for pleating their own fabrics and existing garments at home, with techniques that can be applied to personal experimentation, artistic practice, or creative business ideas.
