About this Event

In this World Cup year, join us for a thought‑provoking talk by Football For Future. This session will explore the relationship between the world's biggest sport and the world's most pressing crisis.

As the 2026 World Cup approaches - set to be the largest, most geographically dispersed tournament and possibly the most carbon-intensive sporting event in history - Football For Future will introduce their work on their World Cup climate campaign. The talk will introduce the 'Pitches in Peril' report, a groundbreaking global climate risk report for football, revealing how climate change is threatening the game from World Cup stadiums to community pitches.

The report, created by Football For Future and Common Goal in partnership with Jupiter Intelligence and supported by the CO₂ Foundation, offers unprecedented analysis of how rising heat, flooding, and drought will reshape the places we play.

With data spanning 16 World Cup 2026 stadiums, future venues for 2030 and 2034, and 18 grassroots pitches tied to football legends including Messi, Salah, and Pelé, the findings mark a turning point for football’s role in the climate crisis

The talk will also explore the potential for climate communicators to utilise the cultural power of football to shift attitudes and drive action on climate change, using examples from Football For Future's work with clubs, players, and governing bodies. You will have the opportunity to hear from those working at the intersection of football and climate - including current professional players.

Speakers:

  • Dan Hall, Communications & Research Manager, Football For Future (and Senior Sustainability Communications and Engagement Officer, UCL)
  • Thom Rawson, Sustainability Manager, Football For Future
  • Alexei Rojas, professional footballer, Arsenal FC
  • Additional player TBC
