Ahoy there! Ready to uncover Pembrokeshire's rather colourful past? 🏴☠️
Our HaverTalk sessions continue this October with a fascinating journey into the world of Pembrokeshire's pirates, privateers and smugglers, brought to life by local historian and storyteller Simon Hancock.
From the earliest days of recorded history in Pembrokeshire, our coastline has been home to some fascinating characters—and not all of them were particularly interested in playing by the rules!
Join Simon as he delves into the stories, legends and characters behind Pembrokeshire's swashbuckling past, including the role of powerful figures such as Sir John Perrot and the Barbary Corsairs during the seventeenth century.
You'll also discover the extraordinary careers of two of the area's most notorious pirates: Howell Davis and Bartholomew Roberts, both born and bred in Pembrokeshire. 🌊
But it wasn't just pirates making their mark along our coastline...
🍻 The Smugglers
With high taxes placed on everyday essentials, smuggling became rife—and it wasn't necessarily just the infamous criminals getting involved. Ordinary local people played their part in making sure precious cargoes of malt, brandy and tobacco made it safely ashore and into the hands of those who wanted them.
Were they criminals, local heroes... or simply making the most of an opportunity? 🤔
Come along this October and find out who was who in the world of Pembrokeshire piracy and smuggling. Discover the rivalries, relationships, legends and connections that helped shape this fascinating chapter of our local history.
Because, as Simon will reveal, when it came to piracy and smuggling, it was all about who you knew—and perhaps, in some ways, it still is!
⚓ All ages are welcome, despite the swashbuckling themes!
So grab your crew, prepare to set sail into Pembrokeshire's past, and join us at HaverHub for an action-packed evening of history, legends and local tales.
Tickets are just £5—don't miss the boat! 🏴☠️
