The Distractions, Picnic Area and David Holmes live at the Spinning Top, 20 Wellington Road South, Stockport SK4 1AA, on Sunday 15th November 2026, 4.30pm-8pm, adm free. Yes we’re supporting the legendary Manchester band The Distractions!
First up will be a solo performance by David Holmes, a veteran of the Manchester post-punk scene when he he played in bands like the powerpop/ garage band outfit The Things, alongside some of the current members of The Distractions! More recently he has played in the atmospheric alt country band Flicker Road and as a solo artist. www.mdmarchive.co.uk/tag/6517/Flicker-Road

Picnic Area will be on next. Originally formed as an alt country band back in the 2000s, the Stockport-based Picnics already have 3 critically acclaimed studio albums under their belts. They have always had a punky/ 60s/ powerpop side to their music and have gradually moved further in that direction, culminating in a long-awaited 4th album to be released early in 2027. Not surprisingly they will be concentrating on their more uptempo material for this gig. Hear the music and read the reviews at www.reverbnation.com/picnicarea

Headliners The Distractions are a classic powerpop band who were contemporaries of The Buzzcocks, The Fall and Joy Division in the late 70s Manchester new wave scene. They were signed to Factory Records, where they released the brilliant “Time goes by so slow” single, then signed to major label Island for their wonderful debut album “Nobody’s perfect”. Despite missing out on chart success they are widely recognised as an influence and are featured on a number of new wave/ powerpop compilations. After an initial split in the early 80s, they have reformed a number of times and released further recordings including the lovely, reflective-sounding album “Kindly leave the stage”. Their current lineup still contains two members from the early lineups, singer Mike Finney and drummer Alex Sidebottom. https://thedistractionsmcr.bandcamp.com
