Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS)Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) is an internationally recognized continuing education program designed to strengthen the assessment, decision-making, and treatment skills of prehospital healthcare professionals caring for trauma patients.
Developed by the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT) in collaboration with the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma, PHTLS combines current trauma science with practical, evidence-based approaches to prehospital patient care. The program emphasizes rapid assessment, identification of life-threatening injuries, appropriate interventions, and sound clinical decision-making.
Rather than relying solely on memorized treatment sequences, PHTLS challenges providers to understand the principles behind trauma care and apply them to complex, real-world situations. Particular emphasis is placed on critical thinking and recognizing that patients with multisystem trauma may require individualized treatment priorities based on their injuries, physiology, and circumstances.
Through classroom instruction, discussion, and practical application, participants develop a systematic approach to evaluating and managing injured patients in the prehospital environment.
Course Topics:
The course utilizes the internationally recognized PHTLS textbook and addresses essential areas of trauma care, including:
Physiology of life and death
Scene assessment and safety
Primary and secondary patient assessment
Hemorrhage recognition and control
Airway assessment and management
Breathing, ventilation, and oxygenation
Circulation and shock
Considerations for special patient populations
PHTLS is designed to help EMS professionals strengthen their trauma knowledge, sharpen clinical judgment, and confidently apply evidence-based principles when caring for critically injured patients.
