This exhibition brings together three Toronto-based artists and their recent explorations in photography. This work explores form, process, texture, environment, and labour through three very distinct yet related projects.
Stephen Foster
“Transitions” is a work is based on a recent journey to the Japanese Art Islands and Tokyo. In this portfolio Foster explores form and texture while representing human labour through residual artifacts. The work reflects dialogs of nature vs. human environments and evokes narratives of tradition vs modern while revealing the ephemeral and transformative nature of these village and urban spaces.
Stephen G.S. Foster is an electronic and digital media artist. His work includes interactive multi-channel video installations, VR, photography and single channel video. He has presented in galleries and film and media festivals across Canada as well as in New Zealand, Sweden, Germany and the United States. Currently, Foster is a Professor in the Faculty of Art at the Ontario College of Art and Design University (OCADU) in Toronto.
Ashok Mathur
“dancing with washi” is a series of platinum-palladium prints that document the progression of form, content, and tradition while investigating cultural and material histories in the context of photography, printing, and sustainability. The series was made at a paper mill operation in Ino, Japan and printed on the washi seen in production in these photographs.
Ashok Mathur is the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies and Vice-President, Research, at the Ontario College of Art and Design University. He is a novelist, poet, and artist and his literary and installation work has been presented nationally and globally.
Gerald Pisarzowski
“Equivalence” creates quiet, self-contained images that explore beauty, harmony, and order through shape, line, form, and texture. Drawing from both natural and human environments, his work reveals subtle correspondences, decay and corrosion, stone and steel that speak to time, transformation, and an underlying universal rhythm. Through diptychs and hand-coated platinum/palladium prints, he invites viewers to slow down and reconsider how meaning emerges through visual relationships.
Gerald Pisarzowski is a Canadian photographer working with film cameras and hand-coated platinum prints. His work has been exhibited in Canada, the United States, and Europe, and is held in public and private collections including the National Gallery of Canada, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the City of Toronto Archives.
