A professionalisation and career mentorship workshop, hosted by QMUL’s School of Politics and International Relations and Mile End Institute
About this Event

Are you a continuing (or advanced) PhD student or a postdoctoral fellow interested on how you can further develop your career inside and outside of academia? In a fast-paced world, where the challenges and opportunities of the job market can change quickly, it’s not easy to make decisions about future career paths. How can you make the best use of the amazing research skills you aquire(d) during your PhD?

The School of Politics and International Relations at Queen Mary University of London is organising a new series of four hands-on professionalisation and employability workshops open to PhD students after their first year of doctorate as well as postdoctoral fellows and other interested ECRs. This event is co-hosted by the Mile End Institute.

Description

Why is it a good idea to go beyond academic articles and books to share your research with the world? This is a 2.5-hour workshop that consists of a roundtable with specialists in impact, engagement, and research dissemination. The workshop will introduce you to what ‘impact’ and ‘engagement’ are, how you can most effectively disseminate your research through the WWW, including podcasts, and how you can do/write for media. Regardless of whether you want to pursue an academic career or you choose a different domain of work, you will learn which outlets you can use to disseminate your work, how you can register as an ‘expert’, and how you can decide what part(s) of your research may be of interest to a wider audience.

Registration

One week ahead of the workshop, please email to [email protected] a document of no more than one page including:

1. A one-paragraph abstract of your PhD (or your main research project) including a brief statement about the stage of research you are at (for instance, finished theoretical chapter, pre-fieldwork/post-fieldwork/no fieldwork, finished analysis, etc).

2. At the end of the document, briefly mention which part of your research you believe may be of wider public interest (and why that is so).

Your one-page statement will inform the content of the workshop.

Registration will close on 12 November.
