About this Event
IAS Residential Fellow Professor Helen Peterson delivers a workshop for Postgraduate Researchers (PGRs), fully titled 'The Academic Career: Navigating Bias, Uncertainties and Glass Cliffs in Greedy Organizations' -
The postgraduate workshop will present findings from my previous research on the academic career and specifically targeting how to navigate challenges and obstacles in an academic setting during the beginning of an academic career. Together with the participants I will investigate the academic career as a professional choice and processes of inclusion and exclusion, against the backdrop of the characteristics of the academic organization. Drawing on organizational and leadership literature the workshop will theorize on concepts such as evaluative cultures, collegiality and academic capitalism. Despite the focus on challenges in the title of the workshop, it will also include a discussion on strategies and helpful advice based on available research on this topic. More senior colleagues will also be invited to share their experiences and supportive advice in order to empower the participants.
