About this Event
The Peer-Reviewed Punchline is a bold, unique performance where science meets comedy…over a couple of drinks. Designed to challenge the “stiff” image of academia, this event transforms real research into an engaging, humorous show that is as enlightening as it is entertaining.
Under the direction of theatre-maker Malcolm Galea, three Maltese researchers - James Ciarlo`, Marie Claire Gatt and Sarah Schembri - will step out of their comfort zones and into the spotlight to present to you the behind-the-scenes of active research; Why (oh, why?!) do we want to ask questions? What is it like to collect data on a remote research station for weeks? How do we face climate conspiracies and poor policies?
Join us at Offbeat Music Bar to discover the flesh and (funny) bones of scientific research and the regular humans who do it!
And stay for the punchline - we’ll be testing your attention span with a fun pop-quiz after the show. We promise a lively, entertaining evening…and most certainly a drink or two!

Registration for this event will enroll you in an evaluation coordinated by the University of Malta to help us understand your views about the Science in the City 2026 festival.
We ask you to complete a questionnaire both before and after attending the festival. Each questionnaire takes approximately 6–8 minutes to complete. You will receive the pre-festival survey by email along with your booking confirmation.
As a special thank you, you will be automatically entered into a prize draw once you have completed both the pre- and post-festival surveys, with the chance to win one of 10 €50 Piscopo gift cards, 2 Heritage Malta memberships, or a selection of other vouchers and discounts.
