A solo percussion recital is a rare event in the contemporary music scene. The program offers the audience an extraordinary intellectual experience: a journey into the physical nature of sound, where live performance meets electroacoustic technology and video art.
The event pays tribute to the anniversary of composer and professor Igor Kefalidis, a pioneer of electronic music in Russia. The program features several of his major works, alongside the world premiere of a new piece for marimba and electronics.
The evening’s musical dramaturgy is built on contrasts and a continuous search for new sonic mediums - ranging from the meditative Renaissance music of Thomas Tomkins to the European avant-garde of Pierluigi Billone, who uses car springs and glass instead of traditional instruments.
Dmitry Shchelkin is a graduate of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory and a long-standing member of Mark Pekarsky’s legendary percussion ensemble. Currently based in Israel, he performs with the Israel Contemporary Players and is member of Israel Symphony Orchestra Rishon LeZion.
Program:
Igor Kefalidis “X2” for electronic sounds and video by Alexander Pettai
Pierluigi Billone “Mani. De Leonardis” for 4 spring coils and glass
Igor Kefalidis “SH_CH” for marimba and electronic sounds, world premiere, video by Eugene Afonin
Igor Kefalidis “Vega_S” piece for electronics and video by Andrew Quinn
Thomas Tomkins “A sad paven for these distracted times”, version for marimba
Igor Kefalidis “Percato Molto” for percussion and electronic sounds
