SYNOPSIS:
Hello, Dolly! is a classic musical comedy following Dolly Levi, an energetic matchmaker who travels to Yonkers, New York. Her goal is to find a wife for a cantankerous half-a-millionaire. Along the way, she meddles in everyone's romantic affairs while secretly plotting to win the wealthy merchant's hand for herself.
In 1890s New York, the irrepressible widow and matchmaker Dolly Gallagher Levi sets out for Yonkers to find a suitable wife for Horace Vandergelder, a wealthy but grumpy hay-and-feed merchant. However, Dolly has a secret agenda of her own: she intends to marry Horace for his money and re-enter high society. While in Yonkers, Dolly sets into motion a chaotic chain of events:
• She convinces Horace to travel to New York City for the day.
• Horace’s two underpaid clerks, Cornelius and Barnaby, decide to sneak off to the city as well in search of adventure and true love.
• Horace’s weeping niece, Ermengarde, and her suitor, a struggling artist named Ambrose Kemper, also flee to the city to elope against Horace's wishes.
All the characters converge in New York, leading to a series of hilarious mix-ups, missed connections, and grand dinners at the Harmonia Gardens restaurant. Dolly orchestrates the pairings beautifully, matching the clerks with a lovely milliner (Irene Molloy) and her assistant, and making sure the niece gets to marry her artist. Finally, after a grand, show-stopping return to society, Dolly guides a humbled Horace into realizing just how much he needs her, resulting in a dual wedding proposal and a joyous finale.
