It is very helpful for the walk leader to have prior knowledge of numbers that will be on this walk. We ask you to complete this very brief form to help with our planning of the walk to ensure that we can safely accommodate all who wish to join us. You will receive an automatic acknowledgement when you submit this form, and also a reminder of the details 2 days before the walk.
Walk leader: Brenda Cameron
A 4.75-mile walk starting at Costa on Pershore Road/near Pebble Mill Lane junction opposite Cannon Hill Park and finishing on Pershore Road at Kings Norton Green.
Meeting arrangements:
By bus: Meet at 10.30 am at the bus stop on Pershore Road outside Costa near junction with Pebble Mill Road. Frequent buses 45 and 47 to and from city centre stop close to Costa. No toilet facilities on the walk. Drinks/snack/toilets option at Wetherspoons at the end.
By Car: This is not really recommended as it’s a linear walk with good bus connections. However, if you prefer to drive you could try nearby Sir John’s Road for a space (not guaranteed!) or the Nature Centre car park at Cannon Hill Park but it’s not cheap at £5.65.
Walk Description:
We start with a brief circuit round the very pleasantly landscaped Pebble Mill site. It has the Bourn Brook running through it along with a few innovative artworks. Continuing the walk we cross the main road, enter Cannon Hill Park and walk alongside the River Rea. Next is Holders Wood – where we may see or hear green parakeets – and then continue to follow the Rea route to Stirchley where we join the Worcester-Birmingham canal. We soon take a detour off the canal to walk round the small Lifford Reservoir, ever popular with fishermen – and swans. Leaving the reservoir we join the Stratford canal for a short section which includes the Grade II listed Kings Norton guillotine stop lock which was designed in the 19th century as a stop lock to control water flowing from the higher Stratford-upon-Avon Canal (roughly 6 inches higher) into the Worcester and Birmingham Canal, preserving water levels for the respective companies. It’s the only lock of this type in the country apparently. A walk across the playing fields brings us to the Pershore Road at Kings Norton with the option for drinks/snacks/toilets at the close by Wetherspoons before catching the bus home.
Expressions of Interest for this walk will close at 06.00 on Tuesday 23 June. After this, please email [email protected] to enquire about any late availability for the walk.
===================================================================
If you later find that you are unable to join us it would be helpful if you let us know by sending an email to [email protected] - this will be passed on to the walk leader and will prevent any delay to the start of the walk should the leader be waiting for you. Please note that some walks have a waiting list so tickets are NOT TRANSFERABLE; if you are unable to join us then please cancel your place to free it up for someone who may be on the waiting list rather than passing it to someone else.
