9am - 3pm
Age range: 12 - 17 year olds
Requirements: Must bring own laptop
$150 for 3 days
The three day workshop is on merging art & digital animation to share stories about whakapapa. In the workshop, the students would explore and express ideas centering themselves, their own family or culture and as a group transform their artwork into moving images using digital editing software. Digital artist Shivani Karan will guide the students, using her experience as a practitioner and lecturer (Digital Media, AUT, 2014-2021) to create achievable learning outcomes and offer her experience and support to the learners.
Learning outcomes would be that the students will be able to recognise and develop differing aesthetic screen perspectives and approaches to story form, genre and style. Also to reconnect to their whakapapa, culture and heritage in a positive way.
Day one: students explore their own passion and purpose and come up with ideas for their animation - the theme being ‘I am from..’. Working in teams, they come up with a plan for their animations. For the rest of the afternoon, students sketch out their animation ideas. No special animation or drawing skills are required, simple or abstract forms and experimental shapes are encouraged.
Day two: With the help of Shivani, students scan artwork and Set up footage on timeline, Sync audio, sound effects and add music to create their digital visions.
Day three: Students Continue to work on their animations, mix final audio, colour grade final scene and export final animations that they can keep in a digital format. On day three they complete their productions and present their animations in an afternoon Screening.
Requirements: Shivani provides youth with the tools to plan, prepare and produce a short mixed media animation. On day one, art supplies will be provided for drawing on paper. On days 2 and 3, art will be scanned into digital formats, two laptops will be provided for the group to share. However, students are encouraged to bring personal devices if they have them.
