The School of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences invites you to our first Inaugural Lecture since 2023! This event will celebrate the work of Professor Paul Curnow, who has been involved in research at the Univeristy of Bristol since he took up a PhD in Biochemistry in the year 2000. At this event, Paul will give a lecture about his research, which will be followed by a celebratory drinks and canapes service.
About Paul's Lecture:
Title: Stranger in a strange land: Adventures in the parallel protein universe.
Biology has evolved thousands of different proteins that perform a diverse array of essential tasks inside and outside living cells. Using computational tools and modern molecular biology, we can now look beyond nature’s protein miscellany and design our own protein sequences from scratch. These ‘never-born’ proteins can capture many of the properties of evolved natural protein sequences and offer a fascinating opportunity to develop our fundamental understanding of the rules that govern protein form and function. In this talk Paul will discuss his recent work in membrane protein design and the new insights to be gained from developing this parallel protein universe.
