A lifetime of love, friendship and disappointment unfolds in letters read by RJ Devaki and Chirag Vora in Naushil Mehta’s Gujarati adaptation of Love Letters.
Across four decades and countless letters, two lives are revealed in all their complexity through love, friendship, conflict, and the truths that are easier written than spoken. Adapted and directed by acclaimed Gujarati playwright Naushil Mehta, ‘Patra Mitro’ reimagines A.R. Gurney’s celebrated play Love Letters within a distinctly Gujarati world.
The story traces the lifelong correspondence between Kalpana and Jawahar. Both born in 1947, they come from contrasting backgrounds—she from a wealthy family, he from a middle-class one. Their candid exchanges capture their ambitions, disappointments, and personal struggles, mirroring the evolving aspirations of Gujarati society from the 1960s onwards. Art, poetry and politics find their way into their exchanges as their lives take different turns, yet the letters preserve a bond that endures through distance and time.
Performed by RJ Devaki and Chirag Vora, the play unfolds entirely through letters read aloud, allowing the characters’ words to carry the story across the years. Produced by Aditi Desai of the Jashwant Thaker Memorial Foundation, ‘Patra Mitro’ offers a moving portrait of a lifelong bond, illuminated by its moments of vulnerability, longing, and grace on the page.
