During Washington Territory's earliest settlement, Snoqualmie Valley indigenous leader Patkanim and his family married four of his daughters to settler men. The husbands varied widely but provided the family, including his Skykomish and Snohomish leader brothers, with advantages at the time. The resulting marriages were both good and bad, as was involvement in territorial events. Candace Wellman combined her background in history, sociology, and genealogy to spend many years researching and writing biographies of 1850s-60s intermarried Northwest Washington Indigenous women and their husbands. The women were instrumental in the formation of local communities, but were left out of written histories. She also wrote a complete biography of one husband, Territorial Justice E.C. Fitzhugh, appointed to the district and supreme court while under indictment for murder.
