Paths of Stone and Paper: An Exhibition by Mona KenawyJoin us at CRAFTASTIC! Art Gallery for the opening of Paths of Stone and Paper, an exhibition by Alexandria-born artist Dr Mona Magdi Kenawy.
Dr Kenawy is a Professor of Mural Painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Alexandria University. Since 1992, she has exhibited extensively in Egypt and internationally, with a particular focus on mosaic art. Her works are held in prestigious collections, including the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the Museum of Modern Art in Cairo, and the Museum of Sant’Alberto in Ravenna, Italy.
Spanning nearly 33 years of artistic exploration, the exhibition traces Kenawy’s evolving relationship with mosaic and her enduring fascination with the expressive possibilities of materials. From marble, stone, mother-of-pearl and pebbles to glass paste, gold and silver smalti, and ceramics crafted from diverse clays, her practice reflects a sustained spirit of experimentation and an intimate understanding of each material’s unique qualities.
For Kenawy, mosaic is far more than an arrangement of tesserae upon a surface; it is a visual language and a formal system through which meaning emerges. Within her work, the inherent solidity and rigidity of the materials give way to abstract compositions alive with colour, light and movement.
Her collages extend this same sensibility to paper. Through the interplay of textures, layers and overlapping forms, she explores the tensions between roughness and softness, opacity and transparency, colour and abstraction. Each fragment of paper becomes akin to a piece of stone or marble, carrying its own material presence while contributing to a larger, evolving composition.
In Paths of Stone and Paper, Kenawy brings these two mediums into dialogue, revealing a practice shaped by material inquiry, abstraction and the poetic transformation of matter into meaning.
