Twenty years ago, Scott Matthews emerged from the Black Country, challenged the status quo and quickly established himself as one of the most revered singer-songwriters of a generation with his mesmeric and inimitable debut album, Passing Stranger. The album that fearlessly pushed generic boundaries with a unique tapestry of folk, rock, blues and ethnic song-writing, earned Matthews some of the highest accolades in the music industry.
It was 2006 when BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe first held his audience in breathless suspense when he aired Matthews' debut single, Elusive, for the first time, instantly hailing the emerging artist as 'an exceptional God's gift'. This was the catalyst that gained the respect of many fellow artists, prompting tours with Robert Plant, Snow Patrol, Bert Jansch, Foo Fighters, Rufus Wainwright and Tori Amos.
Elusive showcased a new and refreshing, humble mastery of melodic song-writing and poetic emotional complexity, which earned Matthews the greatly coveted Ivor Novello award for 'Best Song Musically and Lyrically'. With the timeless fluidity of all great songs, Elusive remains engrained in the lives of those who fell in love with it 20 years ago.
To celebrate the milestone anniversary, a rare and unforgettable opportunity to see Scott Matthews accompanied by a band full of musicality and colour, will perform Passing Stranger live in its entirety. Describing what live performance means to him, Matthews says, 'The lifeblood of these songs flow at their purest and headiest when connecting with a live audience. In all my adventures on the road, I feel most alive when the barriers are knocked down, exposed and leaving nothing behind.'
It is clear Matthews has left an indelible mark upon the world of music. Through his poetic lyricism, soaring vocals and intricate guitar playing, he weaves a magic that entrances audiences. It is no wonder that his shows have become globally renowned for their spiritual atmosphere, transcending the restraints of time... this is a show not to be missed.
