Park(ing) Day Returns to Downtown Sioux City September 18
After a seven-year break, Park(ing) Day is returning to Downtown Sioux City on Friday, September 18. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., parking spaces along 4th & Jones Street will be transformed into temporary spaces for art, games, creativity, community activities and more. The event is free and open to all ages.

What is Park(ing) Day?
Park(ing) Day began in San Francisco in 2005 with a single parking stall. An art and design group temporarily took over the space, turning it into a public park and challenging people to think about how downtown space could be used differently.
That small experiment grew into an annual event held in hundreds of cities around the world. Park(ing) Day gives communities an opportunity to temporarily transform spaces normally used for cars into places for people — supporting creativity, cultural expression, active lifestyles and meaningful interaction.
Sioux City last participated in Park(ing) Day in 2019. This year, the event is coming back with local businesses, organizations, artists and community members taking on their own 8-by-16-foot parking spaces.

What can you expect?
There will be plenty to see and do along 4th & Jones, including art workshops, carnival games, community vision planning, ticket giveaways, a compliment tree and other activities for all ages.
Participants include:
Beyond the Bell + The Scoop’s Udder Place are teaming up to bring carnival games to two different Park(ing) Day spaces.
Briar Cliff University - Members of the admissions team will be on site to connect with students from the Career Academy and share information about opportunities at Briar Cliff.
Courtyard by Marriott - Courtyard is bringing a football-themed activity to its space, inspired by the brand’s connection to the NFL.
Daymoon Studio by Toryn - Local artist Toryn will turn the space into a rotating series of free art workshops throughout the day. Activities may include handmade papermaking, intentional collage, cyanotype printing, figure drawing and printmaking. Participants will have opportunities to jump in and make something of their own, with a limited amount of artwork available to take home for free.
Explore Siouxland will bring a Lewis and Clark-inspired activity to the event, along with its popular explorer buttons and another fun activity still in the works.
Games King will introduce visitors to the local game store with game demos and an open space where people can drop in for an impromptu card game.
Jacquelyn Brummond, URES - Stop by for a little kindness. Visitors will be invited to write a random compliment and add it to a clothesline or “kindness tree,” then take a different compliment to keep. The space will be set up as a cozy spot focused on simple acts of kindness.
Jody House for County Board of Supervisor - Visitors can test their knowledge with historic trivia and question-and-answer games, while also learning about voter registration and the importance of participating in elections.
Orpheum Theatre - Stop by to learn about upcoming shows at the Orpheum Theatre, enter ticket giveaways and find out what’s coming up on the calendar.
ParkMobile will be joining the event with an interactive Park(ing) Day space of its own.
Rob Sand for Iowa - The space will feature campaign information and an interactive game for visitors to participate in.
SIMPCO
Get involved in a couple of community visioning and planning exercises, including a community visioning board and a city-building game. Specific details are still being finalized.
The fun of Park(ing) Day is seeing what happens when people are given a small space and the freedom to get creative with it. An 8-by-16-foot parking space may not sound like much, but it can become a lot more when people start imagining what else is possible.
