Parenting Underground is a gathering for parents whose children have been impacted by addiction or significant mental health challenges, including parents who are grieving the loss of a child.Parenting through addiction, mental health crises, recovery, or loss can feel hidden, isolating, and hard to explain to people who haven’t lived it. It can hold so much at once: love, fear, hope, exhaustion, grief, joy, and everything in between. Parenting Underground is a space to be with other parents who understand some of what you carry and to turn some of the care you so often give to others toward yourself.
Much of our time will be led by therapists Chaz Franke and Teresa Strong, who will help us explore the often unseen emotional work of caring deeply for someone we love. Their session, Labor of Love: Understanding the Deep Needs of Emotional Caregivers and Space Holders, will include plenty of opportunity for reflection, discussion, and connection with other parents.
The day will also include opportunities to participate in optional restorative experiences designed to help you slow down, ground, and care for yourself.
Morning coffee and light refreshments will be provided, along with lunch.
Parenting Underground is open to parents connected to Underground Recovery Community, The Gathering, and the wider St. Louis community. You don’t have to be a part of The Gathering or any church to participate.
