Does it matter who makes a photograph? Under what conditions was it created? How does it enter the world, and whom does it serve?
Join the Bronx Documentary Center and L Nour Editions for Against Disappearance: Photography as Practice, a panel discussion featuring Martha Naranjo Sandoval, Kris Graves, and Anthony Hamboussi.
Rather than organizing the discussion around a shared photographic style or subject, Against Disappearance shifts attention away from the image alone and toward the larger life that produces it: the relationships between photographers and the people they photograph, the institutions that commission and publish the work, the audiences that encounter it, and the histories and power structures through which it circulates.
The panelists will discuss how their individual ways of working have developed over time and how those practices shape the photographs they make. Their work raises questions about family and migration, history and the landscape, trust and community, and the responsibilities that begin before a photograph is made and continue after it enters the world.
The conversation will be curated and moderated by photographer, publisher and educator Anthony Hamboussi. It is presented by L Nour Editions in partnership with the Bronx Documentary Center and accompanied by the first issue of L Nour Conversations, a reader exploring photography as a practice through the perspectives of photographers, publishers, writers and artists.
