Dan Friday - Ancestral Inspired Art | Meet The Artist
A member of the Lummi Nation and a Skagit Valley–based artist, Dan Friday has spent more than 30 years creating powerful and distinctive works primarily in glass. Drawing inspiration from his Coast Salish heritage, Friday brings traditional themes, imagery, and cultural perspectives into the contemporary world of glass art.
For this month’s Peninsula Art League Art Forum, Dan will share his journey as an artist, discuss his creative process and influences, and showcase examples of his extraordinary work.
Friday’s work has been exhibited and collected internationally, and he has completed residencies at renowned institutions including the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, the Burke Museum in Seattle, the Corning Museum of Glass, and the Chrysler Museum, as well as residencies in New Zealand and Taiwan. His many honors include an Artist Trust Fellowship, the Bill Holm Grant, the BIMA Award, the James Earl Fraser Award at Prix de West, and the Discovery Fellowship from the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA).
You may also recognize Dan from Netflix’s acclaimed glassblowing competition Blown Away, where he introduced his artistry to an international audience.
His career includes teaching at institutions such as the University of Washington, Pilchuck Glass School, Penland School of Craft, the Chrysler Museum, and Haystack Craft Center. In 2017, he also founded the Native Youth Outreach Program at Pilchuck Glass School.
