Painting Water - Technical Foundations4.5 hours; $190
Water can be one of the most beautiful - and most challenging - subjects to paint.
In this hands-on workshop, local artist Narelle Beaver shares clear, practical techniques to help you better understand what you’re seeing and how to translate it into a painting.
This session is designed for beginner to intermediate artists who enjoy painting coastal scenes and want to feel more confident tackling water.
You don’t need to be advanced, but some prior painting experience - such as mixing paint and using brushes - is required. The workshop is taught in acrylics.
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
By the end of the workshop, you’ll have a clearer understanding of how to observe and break down the key elements of a seascape - from sand, reflections and refractions to foam, movement, colour and light.
Narelle will guide you through four practical techniques you can take straight into your own art practice, including:
* How to observe and breakdown the elements of nature and elements of art.
* Building convincing waves with perspective
* Painting the shoreline foam
* Capturing reflections on water and wet sand
HOW THE WORKSHOP RUNS
This is a relaxed but technique-focused session in a small group setting. Narelle demonstrates each step before guiding you through hands-on practice, offering feedback, encouragement and practical suggestions along the way.
During the session, the group will take a short visit to the beach to practise observing the ocean, strengthening your ability to truly see and interpret what you later paint.
Rather than focusing on producing a polished final artwork, the emphasis is on building real skills you can continue to develop in your own work. The class will include:
* Demonstration and practice of 4 separate aspects of painting water
* Time for you to practise under her guidance and start your own seascape
WHO THIS WORKSHOP IS FOR
* Painters who feel unsure how to approach painting water
* Artists wanting stronger technique, structure and confidence
* People who’ve painted before and want to better understand how to paint what they see
* Artists wanting to learn how to handle reflections, refractions, movement, light and surface patterns in water
Materials: All materials supplied
Please bring: A hat and your phone or camera for the short observational visit to the beach
