Clouds can look deceptively simple—but capturing their softness, dimension, light, and movement in watercolor can be surprisingly tricky. In this three-hour, beginner-friendly workshop, I’ll teach you several different techniques for painting clouds, including a few useful shortcuts that make the process far less intimidating.
We’ll explore how different approaches create different types of skies, and I’ll break down the biggest mistakes artists make when painting clouds. Once you understand what’s going wrong—and why—it can completely change the way you approach them.
We’ll finish by focusing on composition: how to look at reference photos featuring different skies and cloud formations, decide what to simplify or emphasize, and confidently turn what you see into a watercolor painting.
This workshop will be held at my Portsmouth studio and is perfect for beginners as well as experienced watercolor painters who want to feel more confident painting skies.
