4-week adult art course in Blacon, ChesterWhat if learning from the masters wasn’t about copying their paintings, but discovering what their work can teach you about your own?
Across four Wednesday afternoons, we’ll explore the distinctive visual language of Matisse and Van Gogh, looking closely at colour, mark-making, movement, composition, light and shadow, then using those ideas to create artwork that feels personal to you.
This is not a “paint by numbers” style course and you won’t simply recreate famous paintings. You’ll be supported to understand what makes these artists’ work so powerful, experiment with their approaches, and then apply what you learn to your own imagery and ideas.
I’ve designed the course drawing on my background in Fine Art, Art Education and my doctorate in Education, so there is real art theory and educational thinking underpinning the sessions, but everything is taught in an accessible, practical and beginner-friendly way.
✨ WHO IS IT FOR?
Complete beginners are very welcome, as are people returning to art after a long break and more experienced artists who want to loosen up, experiment and develop their own visual language.
You do not need to arrive with a “style” already figured out. Part of the point is to explore, experiment and start discovering what feels like you.
🎨 WHAT WE’LL EXPLORE
Across the four sessions we’ll work with Matisse and Van Gogh as our starting points, exploring areas such as:
• expressive colour
• brushwork and mark-making
• rhythm and movement
• composition
• light and shadow
• personal interpretation
• translating an artist’s ideas into your own work
There will be demonstrations, guided teaching, practical exercises and plenty of opportunity to develop your own response.
