About this Event
We created Page Against The Machine in 2017 in response to research. 67% of UK adults would like to read more, particularly in times of anxiety or illness. But the demands and distractions of hectic lifestyles get in the way. The reason people want to read (respite from busy, stressful lives), is the reason they can’t (their lives are too busy and stressful).
So every Wednesday, we keep the shop open for an extra hour, and invite you to stop in and... just read for sixty minutes.
Scheduled for 5:30pm, the event is designed to fit snuggling between the distractions of work and home. Phones off, glass of wine, quiet music. Just people, together, reading books.
Come every week, and start treating reading as a practice! Instead of snatching a few lines before bed or on your commute, reading can be something you commit regular time to — like putting an hour aside for the gym, yoga or meditation.
We start every session with a quick introduction from the booksellers, who'll chat about what they're reading. At the end of the hour, we'll invite you to share what you've been reading, too, if you'd like.
Important: Follow the shop on Instagram and look out for the weekly Page Against The Machine post (on Wednesdays) — if it's not there by 2pm, that means we're having a week off (due to holiday, childcare, or another unavoidable reason!)
