The MusicFour instruments, four distinct characters — Chinese flute, erhu, piano, and drums — meet on stage
not as soloists playing side by side, but as four equal artistic presences in genuine conversation. The
program features newly commissioned works written specifically for this project, combining
rigorous compositional thinking with the complex harmonic language of contemporary jazz. Woven
throughout are passages of structured improvisation: music shaped by agreed emotional frameworks
and harmonic colors, where each musician's instinct and in-the-moment response become the
defining force.
This is not free-form wandering. It is a continuous, dynamic negotiation between structure and
freedom — intricate counterpoint, shifting rhythmic centers, the mutual infiltration of Eastern
melodic ornamentation and European harmony. Within that tension lives a music full of surprise
and drama, where every turn is unrepeatable.
The Line-up
• Chinese Flute | ShihYu Liu — Her breath and tone carve open space, redefining the airy
poetry of the Eastern flute tradition within a contemporary musical language.
• Erhu | Shou Ray — With the erhu's characteristic bowed resonance and a deep command of
classical Chinese phrasing, he draws a nuanced, cross-cultural narrative thread through the
improvised whole.
• Piano | Lorenz Kellhuber — Grounded in the European classical tradition with sharp
improvisational instincts, Kellhuber serves as the harmonic core of the ensemble and a
crucial bridge between Eastern and Western sonic languages.
• Drums | Gabriel Hahn — A German drummer whose rhythmic thinking carries the
experimental spirit of contemporary percussion, anchoring the music with breath,
momentum, and dynamic tension.
An Evening at Marsalis
A jazz club is perhaps the most natural habitat for music that lives in the present tense. Pacific
Lights invites you to set aside categories — East or West, tradition or contemporary, structure or
freedom — and let your ears move freely between them. Light resists definition. So does this music.
Every moment on stage is the only one of its kind.
