Art and popular culture have always borrowed from one another, but rarely has the exchange been quite so entertaining. Familiar faces, political symbols, and everyday imagery become the unlikely common ground for artists with remarkably different ideas about what art can be.
Over The Counter Culture brings together Mr. Brainwash, Shepard Fairey, and Banksy, three artists whose intertwined histories have shaped the public perception of street art. Their unlikely connection, famously captured in Banksy's 2010 documentary, is as much a story about the art world's contradictions as it is about the artists themselves. Banksy uses humor to make uncomfortable truths difficult to ignore, while Shepard Fairey taps into the visual authority of propaganda to examine power and influence. Mr. Brainwash turns the machinery of popular culture back on itself, embracing the very fame and commercial spectacle that street art once seemed determined to resist.
Opake enters the conversation from a different generation, bringing a perspective shaped as much by digital culture as by the streets. His fractured cartoon characters pull apart the imagery of childhood, while his newest works turn toward art history. Familiar masterpieces are reimagined through the pixelated graphics and unmistakable interfaces of early personal computers. With a healthy dose of humor, his work joins the art world's ongoing questions about originality and artistic legitimacy.
Together, their work presents a world in which an image can be a protest, a product, or something in between. Over The Counter Culture celebrates the peculiar contradictions of artists who challenge the establishment while becoming some of its most recognizable names.
