Golden hour to city lights: an outdoor portrait workshop in NYC
Photograph a professional model in three kinds of light in one evening: golden hour, blue hour and the city at night. Tony Northrup and NYC street portrait master Kash The SOHO Shooter coach you at every setup, with two instructors for up to 10 photographers.

Your instructors
Tony Northrup has spent more than 30 years in photography. He wrote Stunning Digital Photography, which has sold more than 2 million copies, and hosts a YouTube channel with 1.6 million subscribers.

What to bring
A camera and your favorite portrait lens, a charged battery, an empty memory card and a warm layer. Sunset is at 6:12 pm, and it cools off quickly after dark. All skill levels are welcome.

Meet and set up
Info: Meet in the Meatpacking District and set up your camera for photographing people on the street. Times are approximate: we follow the light.

Posing and expression
Info: Work with the model in natural light, and learn to direct poses and expressions so people look relaxed instead of stiff.

Golden hour
Info: Low, warm sun until sunset at 6:12, the best natural light of the day.

Blue hour, then flash
Info: As the sky turns deep blue, add flash and balance it with the last of the daylight.

Night and city lights
Info: Light the model with flash while the city turns into bokeh behind them.
