Over two sessions focusing on navigation and hill skills practice, we’re working on confidence for days out exploring the hills on foot.
About this Event

Lead by local outdoor instructor Jenny, our Hill Walking Skills courses are designed to help you gain the confidence and know-how to navigate the great outdoors safely and effectively. There are two courses on offer:

  • Navigation: discussion-based, with a practice walk on a smaller local hill
  • Guided hill walk: a full hike up to around Corbett elevation (~800m) where you can put your skills to the test under guidance.

You are welcome to book one or both of the courses, depending on what areas you feel you would like to cover.

The navigation course will cover:

  • Navigation fundamentals: Understanding maps, basic compass use, brief introduction to bearings
  • Planning a day in the hills: route choice and planning, timings, weather considerations, identifying hazards
  • Kit & equipment: what to carry for a typical Scottish hill day, clothing and layering, navigation equipment, emergency equipment
  • Mountain safety & emergencies: common mountain hazards, changing weather and visibility, what to do when things don’t go to plan
  • Responsible access: introduction to the Scottish Outdoor Access Code,
  • Gaelic & the landscape: a brief introduction to common Gaelic words found on Scottish maps, using place names to help interpret and understand the landscape

The rough timings for the day:

10.00 - Meet at Atlantis for an indoor discussion on the basics

12.00 - head out to Battleship Hill

13.30 - have lunch on the hill or stop along the way

15.30 - head back to atlantis together
