If so, then please join scientist Joey Curti for and evening lecture and nature walk exploring the remarkable abilities of bats and how they impact ecosystem. This lecture examines bat diversity, unique biological traits, and how bat health connects to human health, drawing on current research in ecology and genomics.
Joseph “Joey” Curti, Ph.D. (he/they) is a postdoctoral research fellow at the UCLA La Kretz Center for California Conservation Science. Joey’s current research focuses on the impacts of anthropogenic stressors on bat community composition in urban areas across California. Joey received his Ph.D. in 2024 from the UCLA Ecology and Evolutionary Biology department, where he worked with statewide resource managers on a variety of conservation genomics projects. This included a collaborative project with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife aimed at evaluating range-wide landscape genomics of the Yuma myotis bat (Myotis yumanensis). Joey has been working with bats since 2015 and regularly leads acoustic bat walks and classes on bat ecology and natural history for groups across Los Angeles. Following the lecture, Joseph will lead a walk along the Los Angeles River where we will use specialized microphones to acoustically detect bats. Lecture and guided walk appropriate for all ages.

Nature walk - 8:15pm. After the talk Joey will take us on walk along the LA River to do some live bat indetification.
There is no parking on-site so please consider rideshare or carpool and allow yourself time to find parking. This event is all ages but children must be accompanied by an adult. RSVP required.
