Las Folkloristas de Nuevo México and Grupo Sangre de Cristo present the play Our Lady of the Tortilla by Luis Santiero at El Chante Casa de Cultura, 804 Park Ave. SW in Albuquerque on Friday November 13th at 7 p.m. and Saturday November 14th at 2 p.m.
The collaboration represents a tribute to the late Cipriano Vigil Sr. and the late Arsenio Córdova who worked together to present the music, dance and theater during their lifetimes. Their daughters Fela Vigil-Piñon and Theresa (Tessa) Córdova, Ph.D., co-direct the laughter-filled production with poignant messages.
The play, originally presented at INTAR Hispanic American Arts Center in New York City June 3, 1987, could occur anywhere at any time, but especially rings true today. In the storyline, the individuals of the Cruz/Cantú family experience problems and hopes of their own, and just when it appears that nothing positive could occur, Tia Dolores Cantú sees the image of the Virgin Mary on a tortilla she is preparing as part of an order for her catering business. Then, pandemonium occurs. One must see the ending for the true meaning of all the activity on stage.
Tickets cost $10. Due to limited space, call 575-779-0445 for reservations.
