About this Event
Dr. Ir. Nico Tillie is a landscape architect, botanist and urban ecologist at Delft University of Technology, he heads the Urban Ecology Design Lab in the Section of Landscape Architecture, Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment. Dr Tillie will be joining OPENspace to give a seminar on the urban ecosystems as a basis for design and development.
Abstract:
This lecture positions the urban ecosystem as the foundation for spatial planning and design. Building on Forman's definition of urban ecology, it introduces Urban Ecology Design as the application of ecological principles to create biodiverse, regenerative and resilient living environments. A layered reading of the city underpins the approach: natural, urban and social layers. Building on this, a three-tier System–Habitat–Species framework is proposed: intervening in the underlying processes, creating habitats and ecological networks, and actively supporting target species. The TU Delft ECOcampus serves as a living lab, with the Urban Climate Grove field experiment showing how cooling, water retention, biodiversity and spatial quality can be integrated and monitored at one site. International precedents and graduate research further illustrate the framework's applicability across climatic and cultural contexts. The lecture argues that urban green should be conceived as a continuous network from building to landscape, designed explicitly for synergies between nature and society.
