About this Event

For more than 160 years, sports have occupied a central place at New York University. Students and alumni carried the torch high at championships, the Olympics, and intercollegiate and club competitions, and the wider community enjoyed a range of classes for exercise and learning. Additionally, with coursework across multiple disciplines like the history and practice of sports, treatments for sports injuries, and intersections between sport, business, law and media, NYU shows how serious and uplifting play can be. Tradition and Pride: 160 years of sport at New York University speaks to all this and more.

Curated by University Archivist Janet Bunde, with alumnae Maria Bear, Laura Michael and Danielle Nista, Tradition and Pride highlights the people, spaces, and stories that make the University’s history with sports so special. From the bright lights and hardwood floors of Madison Square Garden, to the pages of the student newspapers, to platform tennis matches on the roof of the Library, sports at NYU have persisted and flourished, all against the backdrop of New York City.
