The next Sandler Center for the Performing Arts Art Gallery exhibition, by Virginia Beach artist Pamela Ponce, explores the sense of place the artist experienced in her visits to the Barrier Islands of Virginia. Ponce, whose artistic mediums include photography, cyanotypes, and local materials, presents "Movement and Light: The Barrier Islands of Virginia," showcasing the islands’ rich diversity of life, winds, currents, waves and ever-changing light patterns.
“Movement and Light: The Barrier Islands of Virginia” will be on view Oct. 9, 2026 – Jan. 2, 2027, whenever the Sandler Center box office is open, as well as to event ticketholders during Sandler Center events.
The Sandler Center and Sandler Center Foundation will host a free, public opening reception for this exhibition, 6-8 p.m., Oct. 12. The Sandler Center Foundation requests those planning to attend to please RSVP online in advance of the reception.
Retiring from a career in pediatrics, the artist pursued her interest in art at Old Dominion University, receiving her MFA in 2006. For her MFA thesis, she built a 46-foot oyster reef, shaped as a crescent moon, at Great Neck District Park. The reef was built in collaboration with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and Lynnhaven River Now to highlight their work in restoring the native oyster population.
From 2009 to 2014, she worked with the staff at the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge to document the destruction from fires in 2008 and 2011. The resulting exhibit, “Ebb and Flow: A Tale of the Great Dismal Swamp,” included panoramic photos of the burnt areas and sculptures from the charred tree stumps. It was exhibited at Tidewater Community College and at the National Conservation Training Center for the Fish & Wildlife Service in West Virginia. It was also featured in the magazine The Nature Photographer in 2014.
