Galleri Maria Friis is pleased to invite you to the opening of ELEGY, Martine Myrup’s first solo show at the gallery.
Date: Friday, 9 October
Time: 17:00-20:00
Location: Galleri Maria Friis
Taking the monkey as both mirror and double — a figure suspended between the human and the animal, culture and nature — Myrup uses the animal body as a displaced visual language: familiar yet strange, intimate yet elusive.
In ELEGY, the life-size textile animal sculptures move through states of tenderness, dependency, vulnerability and loss. Rather than offering fixed narratives, the works inhabit an unstable space between closeness and distance, care and autonomy, presence and absence. The animal body becomes a vessel for what is difficult to articulate directly, allowing questions of attachment, mortality and our relationship to nature to remain open.
There is something elegiac in this movement: a desire to hold on to what is already slipping away. Myrup’s sculptures do not simply represent bodies, but evoke traces of touch, memory and care that linger after something has been lost.
The textile works are accompanied by a series of new ceramic works that extend the exhibition’s tactile language and engage with the same questions of fragility, memory and the unstable boundaries between the human and the animal.
Martine Myrup is an artist based in Denmark, working primarily with sculpture. Her practice explores sculpture as substitute and surrogate, as votive offering, and as a means of evoking and giving physical form to what has been lost.
Working with materials and objects that have already served their original purpose, Myrup draws attention to the histories embedded within them. Through recontextualisation, she allows these existing narratives to intersect with new ones of her own making.
Martine Myrup (b. 1977, Denmark) trained as a sculptor at the Glasgow School of Art. Recent solo exhibitions include A Bird Sings in the Bush of Your Bones, Øregaard Museum (2024), and Only Heaven and the Lilies Know, Officinet, Copenhagen (2023).
