On 6 November from 4-6 p.m., Galleri Image opens a new solo exhibition with works by Ditte Knus Tønnesen exploring landscape, color, and photography as ways of shaping what is seen. Colors Remain, Landscape Shifts presents new works rooted in a photographic archive built over more than fifteen years. The landscape recurs, but not as a neutral background; it simultaneously functions as a physical location, a photographic subject, and a cultural image.
One never encounters a landscape without preconceptions. What we see is already inextricably woven together with memory, past images, and notions of nature.
The title, Colors Remain, Landscape Shifts, points to a fundamental principle: change often only becomes legible in relation to something that is temporarily maintained. In natural science, one variable can be kept constant, so that another development becomes possible to observe. But what is retained is also chosen, so it becomes a condition for how the change can be understood.
The exhibition brings together photographic works in color and black-and-white, where color is used in different ways. In some works, it becomes part of the photograph itself, in others it physically exists as an additional layer.
The photographic archive does not function as a chronology. An encounter with the landscape can therefore find its form in an artwork much later. Before, then, and now exist side by side.
Beauty, too, has a place in the exhibition. When Knus Tønnesen first worked with this material, beauty was the most immediate quality of the images—yet it also seemed to demand further justification. Today, her perspective has shifted.
Beauty is not a conclusive answer to the image, but rather an opening: something that can bring you closer to what is perceived, while simultaneously making space for what has yet to come into focus.
