About this Event
ALPFA NJ is partnering with The Open Door, a nonprofit organization that provides English-language learning opportunities for Spanish-speaking adults, for a Hispanic Heritage Month-themed Conversation Hour. The purpose of the event is to give students an opportunity to practice their English in a comfortable, informal setting through conversation and interactive activities.
Students will be divided into groups based on their English proficiency level beginner, intermediate, and advanced and activities will be tailored to each group. For example, beginner-level students may participate in Lotería, allowing them to practice basic vocabulary and phrases. Intermediate students may participate in Dominoes, using the game as a way to engage in more conversational English. More advanced students will participate in activities that encourage longer and more natural conversations.
The event will also include interactive stations based on everyday situations. One example is a Café con Leche station, where students will practice ordering coffee, bread, or other snacks in English. Other stations will focus on vocabulary, speaking, listening, and practical English skills. (Working on getting budget for snacks) The overall goal is to use familiar Latino games, cultural experiences, and everyday scenarios as a way to make English practice more accessible and relevant. Rather than a traditional classroom setting, the Conversation Hour gives students an opportunity to apply what they are learning by speaking English with volunteers and other participants while celebrating Hispanic culture.
*Parking is available at the church location but a bit tight so encourage street parking or public transportation.
