What to prepare for auditions:
Please prepare an audition song that is 15-30 seconds in length. There will be an audition pianist available, so please bring sheet music, with start/stop locations already indicated. You may also choose to bring a karaoke style backing track instead. Please remember that tech is involved and that there can occasionally be issues with this. There will be a bluetooth speaker available to use. Dance shoes are not required, but certainly encouraged.
IF auditioning for Barrie or Sylvia, please prepare a song 30-45 seconds in length that allows you to express emotion while singing.
What to expect at auditions:
• Monday: This night is for both vocal and dance auditions. Actors will go up and sing individually and then do a small group choreographed routine that you will be taught that night. Youth will audition first and will be available to go home after completing their audition for the evening.
• Tuesday: This night is entirely made up of cold reads. You will be called up on stage throughout the evening to read sections of the script in small groups. The intention is to see how you interact with others on stage and what kind of creativity you bring to a role, NOT how well you read or if you are a perfect match for a specific role.
• Wednesday: Callbacks. This night is only for individuals called back to read, sing and/or dance for specific roles or because we need to see a little more from you. If you are not called back, it DOES NOT MEAN that you are not in the show. It means that we have seen enough to know where you are placed. Likewise, not all who are called back necessarily make it into the show.
About the show:
The musical origin story of how Peter became Pan!
Based on the Academy Award-winning motion picture and the play The Man Who Was Peter Pan, Finding Neverland follows the relationship between playwright J.M. Barrie and the family that inspired "Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up." Finding Neverland features music and lyrics by Gary Barlow and Eliot Kennedy and a book by James Graham.
J.M. Barrie, a struggling playwright, encounters a widowed mother, Sylvia Llewelyn Davies and her four sons in Kensington Park. As Barrie befriends the family, he is inspired by their adventures, particularly Peter, who is reluctant to play due to his grief. Barrie helps him to learn to play again and becomes inspired to create a new art form: children's theatre. But who will pay to see a play about children? Who will play these characters? And how will they make Peter Pan fly?
"A spirited, tuneful, nimbly staged delight. One of the year's top ten best shows." - Time
Note: Finding Neverland contains the use of stage weapons.
Cast of characters:
• Barrie: Male-presenting. A successful Scottish Playwright with a rebellious, childlike spirit that is entirely benevolent. He is at odds with the sensible, restrained world around him.
• Sylvia: Female-presenting. A recent widow and mother of 4 boys, she encourages her boys to be free thinkers and is one herself.
• Frohman: Male-presenting. A wealthy American impresario who has stood by Barrie for much of his career. Known as “The Napoleon of Drama”. Note: This role can be doubled with Hook.
• Hook: Male-presenting. JM Barrie’s darker, alter-ego with a wicked sense of humor. Note: This role can be doubled with Frohman.
• Mrs. du Maurier: Female-presenting. A socialite and mother of Sylvia, She holds social etiquette in high esteem and wants her daughter to do the same. Steely on the outside, perhaps to a fault, but wants the best for her daughter and grandchildren. She has a very dry sense of humor.
• Peter: Male-presenting. He is the second youngest of the boys. Peter is buried under the grief of losing his father. Thoughtful and considerate, initially angry and contained, he goes on a journey from 'not believing' to opening up and embracing the world of magic and play that Barrie presents to him.
• George: Male-presenting. He is the oldest of the Davies boys. George is most sensible and mature though still able to play and have fun. Takes charge when he needs to.
• Michael: Male-presenting. He is the youngest of the boys, is also possibly the loudest and most confident in his actions and his statements.
• Jack: Male-presenting. He is the second oldest of the boys, He is the naughtiest and most outlandish, but even his cheek comes from a good heart.
• Mary: Female-presenting. Barrie's serious, prim and proper wife. Will also play ensemble in Act 2.
• Lord Cannan: Male-presenting. Will also play ensemble in Act 2.
• Ensemble: Ensemble will play multiple characters that can include soloists/small groups/multiple lines. Roles include, but are not limited to: Peter Pan, Wendy, Policeman, Park Keeper, Elliot, Ice Cream Man, Albert, Miriam, Henshaw, Bassett, Cromer, Jones, Turpin, Potter, Emily, Thomas, Lael, servants, pirates, Mermaid, Stage Crew
